Greengrocers and Butchers

As I wander around Filey, nothing makes me smile as much as a Butcher’s apostrophe. I never expected one to get me into trouble.

The phenomenon is perhaps more usually known as a Greengrocer’s apostrophe.

But as I headed down Mugger’s Alley someone shouted, “Is there anything wrong with my sign?” I accepted the invitation to explain the two grammatical errors in one word and was told there was nothing wrong with PANINI’S. Accepting defeat, I apologised for being old, educated and a pedant. This was not a hill worth dying on.
