I’m not sure why I chose Charles from a list of six birthday persons. He was born in Sancton, a short distance south of Market Weighton, and although his forebears and descendants spread themselves over the Yorkshire Wolds, I’m not sure there are any notable Filey connections. Perhaps his son Robert, a railway porter at Bempton got as close as any to our town.

James BULMER, a farmer and publican, had the kind of relationship with his housekeeper that must have made tongues wag. Ann TEMPLE had five children with an “unknown spouse” before she married James in 1875 and he may have been the biological father of some of them. They had three legitimate children together but James shares a St Oswald’s headstone remembrance with his father, who had died over fifty years earlier.

Aaron DARLING was the son of a shepherd but his pedigree on the Shared Tree goes back a few generations. His wife Mary Maria’s lines are somewhat shorter but she connects to the Sheader and Watkinson families as well as to CHAPMAN forebears.

Filey’s Doctor James HAWORTH came to be known as “the old doctor” when his son John Thomas qualified as a medical practitioner. And so we had “the young doctor”, aka “Dr Tom”, caring for the town’s well-being.

Mary, daughter of Isaac WALKER, was born in Seamer and I know nothing about her ancestors. Her husband, George ETHEL, was a brickmaker and after his death in 1887, Mary ran a lodging house in Filey. When her turn came, Mary was probably buried with her husband but I haven’t found their memorial.
