Jenny and Jane

A week ago, I alluded to a distant memory I had of the Swedish Nightingale’s connection to Hunmanby. Today’s baptism girl, Jane BRYAN, was born and christened in Filey but her father farmed at Graffitoe for a decade or two in the middle of the 19th century. A local story has Jenny LIND calling at the farm in 1846, mistaking it for Field House. The notion that the cause of a mania sweeping the country was wandering Hunmanby lanes looking for her digs seems preposterous. She was indeed on a concert tour about that time but her management appears to have booked her in at the Foords Hotel in Filey when she passed through this bit of Yorkshire. There’s plenty of Victorian celebrity gossip here.
