Abstract 99 · Filey Bay

Arthur’s middle name is Reginald at birth, and “Rich” in the Find My past transcription of the 1911 Filey Census. His father had, I think, just written the initial and it may have been the enumerator’s hand that later squeezed in “Richd.”. There’s just an “R” in the 1939 Register, when Arthur was still single, living with his parents in West Parade, and working as a “Carpenter Joiner Woodwork Machinist”. He married Brenda Mary HOLLIS the following year. Arthur’s parents and sister Edith are remembered on a stone quite close to St Oswald’s main door.  He has a stone plaque inside the church which reads –

In memory of ARTHUR WALKER, Churchwarden 1942-1972, who died Easter Day, 3rd April 1988 aged 78 years.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life

In Thy presence is fulness of joy

At Thy right hand

There is pleasure for evermore

Filey Genealogy & Connections offered nothing more than Annie PAWSON’s baptism and it was wonderful to discover she reached a great age. The burial register says she was ninety. I haven’t looked for her husband.

I could not find Olaf NORDNES on the Commonwealth War Graves website. If I had, I would have wondered why he hadn’t been given a headstone. He must remain a mystery. There are, however, people alive today who have his name – and an Internet presence. One shares videos and the first one that appeared when I clicked “Play All” was this one. Another mystery.
