They look like 5-spots but the wing-tip pair on 6-spots sometimes fuse – and they like knapweed.

William of Gristhorpe begins and ends his recorded life as a HOLDER, but along his journey of thirty-two years, he has been mixed up with William HALDER of Snainton. I’m not sure he married, and the family headstone in St Oswald’s churchyard records other short lives, including brother George Gardiner at eighteen and sister Mary Ann at 28.

Also, GEORGE GARDINER their son, who died May 28th 1901, aged 18 years.

Richard GREEN was the first of eight children born in Filey to Richard senior and Sarah THOMPSON. In 1851, four children were living with their parents on North Street (now Belle Vue Street). Sarah is done with child-bearing by 1861 but Richard junior is absent from the household on that year’s census night. It is thanks to a contributor to Find My Past that I catch up with him in Wolverhampton in 1881. He is married to Sarah Ann HORTON, working as a “book rivetter” (“boot” really) and has a 14-year-old daughter, Selina. I think she was an only child and in 1901 her parents were in a Wolverhampton household headed by her husband Willie DILKE, a boot & shoemaker. Selina’s parents both died in 1905 and this loss may have prompted the Dilke family to start afresh on the Isle of Wight. Willie died in Ventnor in 1910. Selina completes the 1911 census form at “Wulfrana” in Ventnor. It would appear that she misses Wolverhampton!
