Sarah Again

On 6 August I posted a photo of the headstone remembering Isaac Walker ETHELL and his wife Sarah. The East Yorkshire Family History Society Monumental Inscription Survey offered the burial register entry for Sarah Elizabeth ETHEL (sic) and highlighted the discrepancy in her age at death – 65 on the stone and 74 in the St Oswald’s register. Today is the anniversary of Sarah E. Ethell’s burial and EYFHS again offers the duplicate register entry for a 74-year-old whose last address was Hartford House, Station Avenue, Filey.

Sarah E. is one of three people remembered on a headstone and, at first glance, I have no idea how they are related.

Row 26 | 1499 Shires D295

In loving memory of FRANK W. SHIRES, died Sept 13th, 1915 aged 28.

Also, SARAH E. ETHELL, died Oct 9th 1938, aged 74.

‘Ever remembered’

JOHN CAMBRIDGE MILLWARD, died March 13th 1940, aged 7 months.

Filey Genealogy & Connections shows us that John is the son of schoolteachers Selwyn MILLWARD and Nina Margaret CAMBRIDGE. Nina is the granddaughter of Margaret Edmond Ethell and Margaret Edmond is the sister of Isaac Walker – who is (it seems) the husband of Sarah Ann Mainprize. (“Ann” is a mistake.) If you have taken the trouble to link to FG&C, you will notice that Margaret and Isaac Ethell have a sister called Sarah Elizabeth who lived at Hartford House on Station Road and was buried on 12 October 1938.

The Shared Tree agrees with FG&C that Sarah first married James WRIGHT but helpfully adds her death in 1910. This fits the headstone photo I posted on 6 August, but for some unaccountable reason the GRO Index gives 62 as her age at death, not the stone’s “65”.

The Shared Tree has married Isaac’s older sister Margaret Edmond to Robert Varey HUNTER but has not yet paired his niece Margaret Edmond Hunter with Frank Shires. FG&C has taken this extra step.

It is sad to see that Frank William died so young at the York City Asylum.

Row 43 | 811 Colley G666 | Yawl in full sail

In loving memory of FRANCIS HAXBY COLLEY, the beloved husband of HANNAH F. COLLEY of Filey, who died March 17th 1912, aged 30 years.

‘The stroke was bitter, the loss severe

To part with one we loved so dear

A loving husband true and kind

No friend on earth like him I find’

‘He rests from his labours’

Also, GEORGE S. COLLEY, loved and only son of the above, passed away May 11th 1922, aged 12 years.

‘Sleep on our darling child

There is sweet rest in Heaven’

‘Sadly missed’

Row 36 |1653 Ross D394

‘With Christ which is far better’

In loving memory of ELIZA, the dearly loved wife of JOHN ROSS, who was called home May 25th 1895, aged 59 years.

‘Her children rise up and call her blessed’

Also of the above JOHN ROSS, who entered the higher service Feb 16th 1914, aged 78 years.

‘His servants shall serve Him and they shall

see his face’

Also MALINDA, daughter, passed on Feb 7th 1939.

‘At rest’

And ELIZA ANN, daughter, reunited Dec 17th 1951 aged 73 years.
