Stone 31 · Rudston Mausoleum

Emma Rebecca’s parents are Richard Jesse STEVENSON (AP 1177 · marriage · 12 July) and Mary Darnton HULLOCK (AP 1178 · marriage · 12 July). She was born at Ravine Top and baptised at Filey St Oswald’s. She married Thomas BOTTRILL at St Oswald’s but raised her children with him in Hull where he worked as a lighterman and later as a “transport worker”. (In 1921 their youngest of four children was Hilda, 6).

Elsie BRAITHWAITE’s mother was Betsy Ann ALDEN (AP 139 · birth · 24 January). Elsie had eight siblings but her parents are still childless on the Shared Tree. Elsie was born in Gristhorpe and baptised at Filey St Oswald’s. She married Arthur Margerison SWIFT at All Saints, Muston in 1924 but they lived mostly in Scarborough. In 1939 they had a ten-year-old son. Arthur, a traveller in groceries, died in 1963 and Elsie ten years later.

Nobody seems to know for sure who Jane COLLEY’s parents are. Filey Genealogy & Connections thought her mother was Jane LUNDY but I woke up one day and found she had been usurped by the mysterious Jane STUTTER. This Jane had a somewhat shorter life than Miss LUNDY, making nonsense of her monumental inscription. But then, what is written in stone isn’t always the truth. I could find nothing on Reuben and Jane after their St Oswald’s marriage so perhaps they emigrated. A couple of tantalising sources pointed towards Australia.

Herbert WILKINSON seems to have spent most of his life in North Lincolnshire, but he married Rachel, the daughter of Filey fisherman “Slosh” WATKINSON. Cleethorpes Cemetery seems a pleasant spot to rest eternally.

The marriage of John KNAGGS and Elizabeth Ann HOLMES appears to have been childless. FG&C didn’t get around to marrying the couple and gives Elizabeth’s last address as 12 Reynolds Yard.
