Robert JONES’ great-grandfather hailed from Newham in Derbyshire (Filey Genealogy & Connections) or Meltham in Yorkshire (FamilySearch). One of the nine sources for John on the Shared Tree is the 1861 census – and that places Newham in Yorkshire. The Find my Past transcription says as much and reckons Mary was born in “Marton”. You may see different places in the page image.

Measham in Derbyshire is a contender for me but although there are Jones families in the town in the 1820s, I have not found John there.
John registered the births of four children he had with Mary, the last in 1864. She was a widow in 1871 with only John junior with her on census night. The boy became a fisherman and later a fish buyer and his son, John again, carried on the business, married Sarah CAMMISH in 1906 and today’s birthday boy was their second child and the eldest in 1911. I have not been able to keep up with the Joneses after this census.
FG&C is in two minds about the birthplace of Adelaide Maria BURNETT. Newcastle upon Tyne or Filey. A Collaborate Note on the Shared Tree has an explanation.
FG&C contends that Martha began her life as a BRAMBLES but Adelaide’s Scarborough birth registration gives LISTER as her mother’s maiden surname. Martha Brambles was from Muston. Martha Lister was the seventh daughter of the late Mr R Lister of Scotswood according to a newspaper notice in August 1850. Adelaide is with her older sister Constance in 1881. The Census return that year is one of her sources on the Shared Tree. The death at sea in 1866 of a man called Jonathan Burnett is one more reason to investigate further.
After the early death of William BROWN, Sarah married Robert WISEMAN.
Sarah SAYERS was the daughter of John Sayers (AP 2064) and Bothia BEAN (AP 2065 · marriage · 2 December) and the mother of John William COWLING (AP2100 · marriage · 8 December).
